Payment processing platform for internet businesses.

Stripe's lock-in is the payment infrastructure, not the data. Customer records and subscription data export via API. But Stripe Billing's proration engine, Radar's fraud detection, and Connect's marketplace splits are deeply complex systems that took years to build. Simple one-time payments can move to any processor in a day. SaaS companies with complex subscription tiers, usage-based billing, and dunning workflows should budget 4-6 weeks. The hidden cost is PCI compliance: Stripe handles it for you, and going direct means your security requirements jump significantly.

Open source can do checkout, subscriptions, and basic card processing. It cannot do Stripe Radar (their fraud ML trained on billions of transactions), instant payouts, or the regulated money-movement pieces that require Stripe holding a license in 47 countries. If you process under $50k/mo and accept some manual fraud review, the OSS stack below works. Above that, you're paying Stripe for risk infrastructure, not code.
Stripe is a platform. It bundles multiple capabilities into one subscription. These tools each cover one piece. Teams often assemble 2–3 of them instead of paying for the full suite.
