Braintree's lock-in is the vault. Tokenized card data stored in Braintree's vault cannot be transferred to another processor due to PCI regulations. You'll need to ask customers to re-enter their payment details or use a processor-agnostic token migration service. Simple checkout flows can switch in a week. Teams with recurring subscriptions and vaulted cards for thousands of customers should budget 3-4 weeks, including customer communication about re-entering payment info. The hidden cost is losing the native PayPal integration, which is often a significant chunk of revenue.

Open source covers the subscription and billing logic, but not the payment gateway itself. Card processing requires regulated banking relationships, PCI infrastructure, and fraud scoring that no OSS project can offer. Kill Bill and Lago handle the bookkeeping; you still need someone licensed to actually move money. If you're fine with Stripe or Adyen as the gateway, the OSS billing stack is solid.
Braintree is a platform. It bundles multiple capabilities into one subscription. These tools each cover one piece. Teams often assemble 2–3 of them instead of paying for the full suite.
